how do we mesure actual distance between places on maps?
Answers
Answer:
On the place's page, scroll down and choose measure distance
Calculating Distance on a Map
We can determine a lot of information from a map such as distances, directions and areas. We can measure the distance from Johannesburg to Pretoria, determine that Pretoria is to the North of Johannesburg, or calculate the size of the Guateng province. In determining distances and areas the scale of the map must ALWAYS be taken into consideration.
Calculating distance on a map
In order to explain straight line distance an example will be used:
Step 1
i-distance on a map is calculated between two points, for example between a school and a museum.
ii-You firstly need to measure the length using a ruler with clear cm or mm units from the school to the museum.
Step 2
You now need to write the measurement down that you measured using a ruler from the school to the museum.
e.g. 4cm
Step 3
i- Check the scale of the map on which the school and the museum are found.
e.g. 1:50 000
ii- Then multiply the distance between the school and the museum by the scale on the map.
e.g. 4 cm x 50 000
divide
= 200 000 cm
Step 4
i- The answer above now needs to be converted to the unit of distance in reality e.g. kilometres (km).
We use the following scale for conversion.
ii- We have used centimetres to measure the distance between the school and the museum, therefore, we must convert centimetres to kilometres.
iii-This you achieve by placing 1 under the kilometre box on the scale and placing zeros as you move towards the right until you reach centimetres.
iv- According to the conversion scale above, 1km is equal 100 000cm.
Then to convert your centimetres to kilometres you will have to divide the 200 000cm by 100 000.
= 200 000
divide
100 000
= 2 km
