Like in the poem, THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, if we commit a sin or any mistake, we have to pay for that sin. We experience many hardships and get beaten by others, sometimes even God, constantly. After experiencing all these, we pray for salvation and freedom from these hardships which are a result of our sins. The ancient mariner, who killed the albatross, suffered many hardships such as the ship not moving anywhere, not being able to drink freshwater even in the presence of abundant water in the oceans, etc. This way we pay for our thoughtless and reckless acts.
