How do we subtract negative numbers

The Rules:

Rule Example

+(+) Two like signs become a

positive sign 3+(+2) = 3 + 2 = 5

−(−) 6−(−3) = 6 + 3 = 9

+(−) Two unlike signs become a negative sign 7+(−2) = 7 − 2 = 5

−(+) 8−(+2) = 8 − 2 = 6

subtracting a number is a same as adding the opposite of the number

let's look at the examples

- 5 - 7 = -5 + (-7)

10- (-3) = 10 + 3

Note : in the both example, we can change the subtraction into addition and change the sign of the second number to the opposite sign.
