The maps bear definite relationship with the ground because a map represents portion of the Earth's surface on a reduced size or scale

A SCALE is the ratio between map distance and ground distance. It refers to the distance between two points on the map and the corresponding distance between the same two points on the ground.

A scale is usually written in the corner of the map. Suppose the distance between two cities is 100 km. On the map it is shown as 1 cm. So scale is 1 cm = 100km
