It is first of all depends on the type of material that we used.

If we take conductors such as metals, the voltage gain or college drop is so easy and it easy to conduct current

On insulators, the atoms are tightly bounded and it does not allowed electrons to flow.

In case of semiconductors some prices such as heating or doping we can make possible of current flow.

According to me, semi conductors are more valuable because we can change it according to our wish to conduct current and voltage drop or gain.
