It is believed that whales and dolphins communicate with each other inside water by making various types of sounds.

for instance whales are seen to make sounds in order to call its mate in breeding season.

while dolphins make use of a phenomenon called sonar for locating obstacles, prey etc

Here is your answer,

==================================================

Large whales can communicate over huge distances (across entire ocean basins) using very low frequencies.

Clicks are used to sense their surroundings through echolocation, while they use whistles to communicate with other members of their species and very likely, with other species too.
