A chemical reaction is said to be balanced when the number of different atoms in the product and reactant side are equal respectively.

We balance equations to make sure they follow the law of conservation of mass.

Fe2O3 + C -- Fe + CO2

Reactant side Product side

Fe-2. Fe-1

O-3. O-2

C-1. C-1

The above image is an unbalanced reaction as the number of respective atoms on either sides are not equal.

So we balance the above equation like this.
