The number of electrons losed or gained by an atom to attain stable configuration of its nearest noble gas is called it's valency
for eg- sodium atomic number- 11 will lose 1 electron to attain a stable configuration of neon which is a noble gas of atomic number 10 so the valency of sodium is 1
