The festival Makar Sankranti is in reference to God Sun. The festival is celebrated on 14th of January every year. The significance of this festival is the transit of Sun into the makara that depicts the end of Winter solstice. We celebrate it by kite flying throughout India and also fairs and bonfires.

Infact Makar Sankranti is the very first festival in the New Year.

The Delhites celebrate it by having churma of ghee, halwa and kheer.

The Punjabis go for early river bath and also light lamps with seasame oil.

The Rajasthanis is celebrated by preparing delicious sweets such as puwa, Til-Patti, til-laddoo etc.

Makar Sakranti is a Hindu Festival that is dedicated to the Hindu God Surya (sun) and is celebrated annually in January.

As this festival is celebrated as per the solar cycle therefore it falls more often than not on 14th January.

Its celebratory practices vary regionally with in some places taking a dip in the Ganges River and praying to the Sun God is the practice, while in other places such as in Karnataka especially, the celebration involves pomp.
