Answer:

If the change in one variable appears to be accompanied by a change in the other variable, the two variables are said to be correlated and this interdependence is called correlation or covariation. In short, the tendency of simultaneous variation between two variables is called correlation or covariation.

In Statistics, correlation examines the strength and direction of statistical or numerical relationship or association between two variables

Explanation:

  • The value of correlation between any two distinct variables is denoted by correlation coefficient which is expressed as "r" in Statistics. The value of the correlation coefficient varies or ranges between -1 and 1,inclusive of 0.
  • The degree of correlation between two variables can be classified as Perfect Positive Correlation,Perfect Negative Correlation,High Correlation,Moderate Correlation,Low Correlation and No Correlation.
  • If the value of correlation coefficient is 1 or greater then the correlation between the concerned variables is said to be perfect positive and if it is -1 then it would be considered as perfect negative correlation between the two variables.
  • Now,if the value of correlation coefficient varies between 0.75 and 1 then the correlation between the concerned variables is said to be high and if it is between 0.5 and 0.75,it is considered to be moderate.
  • A correlation coefficient value ranging between 0.5 and 0.75 is an indication of low correlation between the concerned variables and the coefficient value of 0 implies absolutely no correlation between the two variables.
