Literacy is traditionally understood as the ability to read and write. The term's meaning has been expanded to include the ability to use language, numbers, images and other means to understand and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture.

(2) people above the age of seven and are unable to read and write are considered illiterate. On the other hand, people above the age of seven and are able to read and write are considered literate.
(3) High literacy rate is an indicator of social and economic development of society. On the other hand, high literacy rate leads to slow economic, social and cultural development of society.
(4) Literacy rate is related to quality life, the opportunities available and freedom. Thus, it is directly related to development.
