Recoil is the momentum of the gun when it is discharged. In simple terms as mentioned by others it is physics, Newtons Third Law, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In essence is a measure of foot pounds of energy. If the cartridge when discharged develops 400ft·lbf at the muzzle that is the same energy pushing the gun rearwards. It is not what you feel as felt recoil is enhanced or mitigated by various factors for instance the action type of the gun as semi-automatics absorb to some degree some of that energy whereas a bolt or revolver would have a greater felt recoil. The weight of the gun and the length of the barrel will also reduce felt recoil. Recoil is your friend, enjoy the recoil.
