  • In crop farming, different methods of planting are used namely direct seeding, transplantation, manual planting, mechanised planting, indirect planting.

1. Direct seeding

  • Plantation of the crop directly into the crop field.
  • The crop seeds are sown in the soil and cultivated using farming methods.
  • The direct seeding method is used widely to grow cereal crops such as rice, corn, millets, pulses, and some vegetables.

2. Indirect planting

  • Planting of a pre-grown plant or seedling or clonal field plant in the crop field.
  • The seeds are not directly sown but the plants propagated from the seeds are moved in the soil.
  • The method is known as transplantation and is commonly used to grow small-seeded vegetables such as fruit trees, perennial crops.
