how do you distinguish between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid

Alcohol remains neutral to Litmus but the carboxylic acid turns blue Litmus red

ALCOHOL:-

1. Neutral compounds 
2. Volatile
3. No effervescence with the biocarbonates

CARBOXYLIC ACID:-

1.Acid in nature
2. Non-volatile
3.Gives effervescence with the biocarbonates
