How do you distinguish between methanol and ethanol?

ANSWER:

aqueous KOH then iodoform test

LOGIC:

iodoform test works for chcemicals with -CO(CH3) group

the aqKOH will help reduce the HCOH to C=O bond thus

in ethanol the -CO(CH3) group is formed with aqKOH while with methanol its not.
