Because earliest time whenever a student either going for marriage or in the battlefield they used to take their teachers or we can say guru with them so that they can help each other in many situation and in addition to they also lives in guru home till their education ends called gurukul
but today we are setting nicknames of our teachers teasing them and doing vice versa to the older times
