The role of modern gurus and ancient gurus were very different, though they were all revered for their precieved wisdom, purity, judgement and are widely known as people of God.
However, while Gurus were known to live simple lives without worldly objects and desires, today's gurus have come under a lot of criticism for being too flashy, owning large funds and buildings and even having profitable businesses.
If there is one Guru I think was really good, he was the original guru Nankana born near Lahore in modern day Pakistan.
