When it comes to Guru - the genuine ones are Realised Masters, who have experienced the Truth of Life through direct perception of reality - the role has always been the same, whether the times are ancient or modern. They've seen the light within in all its glory & have chosen to lead seekers to realise the eternal truth. Those who aren't enlightened can at best be spiritual guides or Upa Gurus, but certainly not Guru.
The change - perceived or real - is only in the way they communicate & the customisation of methods they offer, which are aligned with the nature of human beings, at a given point in time. Such changes are only at the surface level and are necessary to wake people up from their ignorance slumber.
