With poetry, most often an edit has to do with tweaking the meter. I love it when a poem flows smoothly and the cadence is equal, line by line by line.

Even a non-rhyming poem should have a degree of cadence (in my opinion, anyway), to lend feeling and gently pull the reader to the next line.

With a short story, I usually edit to make something clearer to the reader. I hate stumbling around trying to figure out what a writer is saying, so I don’t want to make that same mistake in my writing either.
