The oxidation number for nitrogen in nitric acid is determined by using plus one for hydrogen and minus 2 for oxygen. Thus for HNO3 the oxidation number is +5. As nitrogen must balance -2 x 3 = -6 for oxygen. You must know that oxygen in most compounds is -2.
