Answer: Use the formula CnH2n+2 for saturated hydrocarbon and CnH2n or CnH2n-2 for unsaturated hydrocarbon where n stands for the no. of carbon atoms.

Explanation: Suppose, u have to identify whether C2H6 is saturated or unsaturated. Let's apply the formula one by one if u r not sure which one to use. Let's start with CnH2n+2, where n, in this case is 2. (Remember the subscript of C is ur n).

Putting n=2,

C2H2(2) + 2

Upon solving, we get,

C2H6 which is the same formula of the hydrocarbon as we took in our example.

U can even tell whether the given hydrocarbon is saturated or unsaturated by looking at the hydrogen atoms. If it is 2 more than twice of carbon atoms then it is saturated or if it is exactly twice or 2 less than twice then it is unsaturated hydrocarbon.
