How do you know the group of an element from its electronic configuration?
I know it's the valence electron but for some elements even with valence electron 7 it goes to 17th group

ScriptedMath: Chlorine
debashreeghosh: It have 7 valence electron only

For elements with valence electrons 1 and 2 the number of valence electrons= group number.
If the number of electrons exceed 2 then group number =valence electrons +10

I hope this is the answer which u were looking for.

A student of class 10 (ICSE)

debashreeghosh: I was trying to say that only
ScriptedMath: Thankyou that's exactly what I was looking for! :)
debashreeghosh: Please me as brainliest
ScriptedMath: What about scandium? It has 3 valence electrons so 13thgroup, but its listed as the 3rd group
Anonymous: actually the rule which is provided by me is only applicable for light elements.... for heavier elements there is an another rule called the spdf rule...
