how do you know when to do hcf or lcm when a question is given...likw when max. min. is asked what to do? is it hcf or lcm?

When minimum is asked do LCM, & when maximum is asked do HCF.
In question greatest also can be asked, so in this you have to do HCF & in case of lowest do LCM.
