How do you know whether two quantities x and y are proportional?

Every ratio yx for related pairs of x and y is equivalent.
Every sum x + y is the same for related pairs of x and y.
Every x term is a multiple of the previous term.
Every difference x – y is the same for related pairs of x and y.
which one is it

Two quantities x and y are proportional if for every ratio y/x for related pairs of x and y is equivalent.

  • If quantities x and y are directly proportional then that means that if x increases then y also increases and if x decreases then y also decreases.
  • Also the quantities x and y if increase or decrease they increase by the same factor. Therefore if the ratio of found out, which is y/x, that remains constant.
  • For example if x is proportional to y, then if x is doubled then y also gets doubled, then the ratio will be 2x/2y = x/y, which is the same.
