Gulliver met the island's governor who has the power to raise people from the dead for 24 hours. However, the Governor can only raise the same person once every three months.
The Governor offers to raise any dead person Gulliver wants to meet on the agreement that he would only ask the dead questions limited to the time he was on earth, to which Gulliver accepted the term. In this manner, Gulliver got to meet Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great and Marcus Junius Brutus.
