Take two potted plants, keep one in sunlight and other in a dark room. Then after few days conduct a test for presence of starch . We will see that the one kept in sunlight has starch which means photosynthesis occurred in it, while the one kept in dark will not have starch.
Hence we conclude that sunlight is essential for photosynthesis.
