At the age of three the mother of Bismillah Khan took him to his maternal uncle's house in Benaras,Bismillah enjoyed watching his uncle's practice the Shehnai. Soon Bismillah started accompanying his uncle, Ali Bux, and learned how to play Shehnai, by taking music lessons from him, he used to practice Shehnai throughout the whole day. Thus, his maternal uncle Ali Bux was a great source of inspiration for him, because he helped him to learn Shehnai.
