how do you see the significance of sculpture in contemporary
Answers
Answer:
mentioned in other answers, sculpture had a historical role to make real, in solid matter, respect for gods, imagined beasts, religious icons or special things or notable persons. However in the modern era the role of sculpture, like most art, has changed to be more about exploring or expressing more secular concerns like individual expression on issues such as highlighting aspects of the world or our place in it that we generally ignore or take for granted or don’t realise the gravity of or beauty in. Contemporary sculpture in dealing with these issues can be figurative, abstract or a morphing between the two. Sculpture can use any materials or processes that our current technology provides, from stone to electronics and light itself. It can be long lasting or over in a second. The importance of sculpture these days, like all art, is to shed new light on these human and world issues by making us think/feel and reflect, consider, empathise, enjoy and even perhaps prompting action through this manipulation of matter in three dimensions and time. In the Western world we live in times of questioning and the sanctity of the individual, a degree of free speech and the pursuits of science. Sculpture keeps our culture going and reinforces these values without saying a word by using the language of form, space and time and also influences architects and architecture.
