When the two liquids in the mixture are such that they boil without decomposition or chemical reaction and their boiling points have sufficient difference, more than 25°C then they can be separated by simple distillation.

Take the given mixture of acetone and water in s distillation flask. set the distillation apparatus as shown in adjoining figure, using a liebig's condenser . when ready , start the flow of water through the condenser and slowly heat the mixture in the flask. keeping a close watch on the thermometer readings. observe carefully the happenings in the flask.
