 y = 6

Step-by-step explanation:

                   4y^2 - 3(y-4)   =   4y(y-1) + 3y

                   4y^2 - 3y + 12 =   4y^2 - 4y + 3y

 4y^2 - 4y^2 -3y + 4y - 3y =    -12

                             y - 3y     =    -12

                                  -2y    =   -12

                                       y   =   12/2

                                        y  = 6
