Teachers Shape Lives Through Words and Actions There was a teacher who paddled so hard that a child was bruised, a teacher who yelled so much that a child was broken, and a teacher who criticized so much that a child was hopeless. I don’t agree with Plato that all people are capable of one duty, which is decided early in life and is unchangeable. “ A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” and by labeling children and placing them in categories, we are, in effect, sealing their fate. Understand their interests, incorporate them into the teaching material, and the child’s knowledge will flourish. The purpose of public education is to inspire good character traits, convey the culture, and provide a broad variety of academic and social learning experiences. Classrooms should be doorways to many different paths that each student is allowed to explore. School should excite students about discovering life, and should equip them to find their place in it. My niece has a teacher who has inspired me with her teaching methods. She always seems to be going that extra mile for her students. One day she was to read a story about the ocean. The night before, she prepared cups of blue Jell-O with candy-shaped fish inside. The children ate the “fish in the sea” while the teacher read the story. I’m sure those students will always remember this teacher, as well as the lesson.
