How does (a-b)2 become (a+b)2-4ab?

(a-b)²

= (a-b)(a-b)

= a² -ab - ab + b²

so

( a-b)² = a² - 2ab + b²

          = a² + b² - 2 ab + 2 ab - 2 ab    [ add 2 ab and subtract 2 ab]

          = a² + b² + 2ab - 4ab

We know that ( a+b)² = a² + b² + 2ab

        = (a+b)² - 4 ab
