The cathode and anode (the positive and negative sides at either end of a traditional battery) are hooked up to an electrical circuit. The chemical reactions in the battery causes a build up of electrons at the anode. This results in an electrical difference between the anode and the cathode.

 ANSWER:

▶ The chemical action within a cell generates the potential different across the terminals of the cell, when no current is drawn from it.

▶ we define potential difference between two points in an electric circuit carrying some current as the work done to move a unit charge from one point to the other.

▶ When a battery is connected to a conducting circuit element, the potential difference sets the charges in motion in the conductor and produces an electric current.

Hope this helps! =)
