Following characteristics of cooperative societies exemplify democracy and secularism :  

(1). Democratic basis :  

Democracy is the basis of a cooperative society. No exploitation of Man by man is the principle of this organisation. Every member exercises an equal rights in its affairs. ‘One member one vote’ is the principle of democracy applied to cooperative organisation. The member elect their own managing committee for daily business of the society. Hence, it is an emblem of true democracy.

(2). Religious and political neutrality :  

It generally tries to maintain political and religious neutrality. Religious faith and political difference do not come in the way of their relations as members of the society.
