How does a fuse act as safety device in electric circuits an electrician puts a fuse of reading 5a?

The fuse only allows current of 5 ampere and when the current excedds it melts avoiding the short circuit and the appliance is saved

It depends on the thickness of the wire so if the electricity excide above 5amphere it would break
