how does a light detector work

The light sensor is a device which converts light energy of various wavelengths from infrared to uv into the electrical energy(or to an electrical signal). This is the reason that they are named as photoelectric devices. They sense the light during this process so can be called as 'photo sensors'.

Light sensors are photovoltaic cell. When light fall on this cell it produced voltage or emf in proportion to light falls.
More light more emf and so on. Camera sensor also works on same principal. Difference is camera sensor have big no of pixels to identify to elaborate falling light into photo.
