A compass points north because all magnets have two poles , a north pole and a south pole, and the north pole of one magnet is attracted to the south pole of another magnet.

Magnetic compass works like a bar magnet. It helps us by indicating directions, like when a bar magnet is suspended freely then its north pole shaws north and south pole shows south.
