Muscles are attached to bones by tendons and help them to move. When a muscle contracts (bunches up), it gets shorter and so pulls on the bone it is attached to. One muscle will contract and pull a joint one way and another muscle will contract and pull it the other.

Muscles work in pairs in a way that one muscle pulls the bone away from the joint, while the other pulls it back. If one muscle contracts, its partner (the other muscle of the pair) relaxes. This pulls the bone towards the contracted muscle.
