Answer:

As it swings from side to side, it rocks a lever called an escapement that locks and then unlocks the part of the mechanism driven by the falling weight. ... Since (in theory, at least) a pendulum of a certain length always takes the same amount of time to swing back and forth, the pendulum is what keeps the clock to time.

Answer:

As a child, I often wondered how pendulum managed to continue swinging back and forth for so long. "They must have really powerful batteries", I thought considered that they such huge pendulum swing a day in and out.

Little did I know back then, but pendulum clock don't need batteries at all! And the pendulum itself? It may seem like it's just idling around, serving no purpose and it swings to and fro,but that action is actually what keeps the clock accurate to the second.
