Ciao,
Number of chromosomes are maintain by meiosis .in wich gamete are formed have half number of chromosomes .and when this two haploid gametes are fused they form a diploid zygote.
for example hummans have 46 chromosomes but there gametes have 23 ( as in sperm and ova) so when these gametes meet they form a zygote having 46 chromosomes.half half from both gametes.
i really hope you'll find this answer helpful.
stay blessed.
