There are two Adrenal glands which are located at the top of each kidney:
➛ Adrenal gland secrete hormones which maintain the correct salt balance in the blood.
➛ They also produced the hormone adrenalin termed as 'stress hormone' because it helps to calm down when one is very angry or embarrassed or worried.
The adrenal medulla produces the hormone adrenaline or epinephrine also known as emergency hormone because it is released into the blood in greater amounts during highly emotional states, such as fear or anger.
It produces the following effects in a body:
- It increases the heartbeat, blood pressure, respiration and suppresses the digestive process.
- Due to increased heartbeat and breathing rate muscles receive more blood and oxygen that is necessary for rapid contraction of muscle cells.
- It also stimulates the release of glucose from the liver. Thus, the glucose in the blood increases.
- It produces flight and fight response that is prepare the body for emergency situations.
