one of the major method which is involved in this is acidic rain

pollution from factories and cars etc results in the accumulation of gases like nitrogen oxide and sulphuric oxide in the air and when it rains these gases mix with the rainwater which results in acidic rains.
now this acidic rainwater goes into the water bodies thus making them polluted
