Alum helps in water treatment:

  • Alum is added to purify water, alum is Aluminium sulfate and it acts as a coagulant also which serves as a 'flocculant'.
  • A coagulant binds with extremely small particles in the water to form a large particle.
  • The alum promotes coagulation of little particles which helps determine problems of 'color as well a turbidity'.
  • When the solution of 'alum is added' to contaminated water, it binds with contaminates and small suspended particles of 'mud, dirt', etc to form a large particle.
  • The large particle can be easily removed by filtration and decantation and thus we get purifying water.
