How does an atom become a negative ion?​

a neutral atom always consists of equal no of electron and protons ... hence the charge over its remains as zero.... but whenever due to any possible circumstances a extra electron is added to the shell of the neutral atom due to external factors it converts in a negatively charged atom also known as a negatively charged ion
