The little girl was only five, but still was aware of the situation that her family is in.
Aron was urging his daughter to run towards a Christian church, believing that it would be a place of salvation.
Aron and Mela are constantly wondering if their daughter will forgive them for what they've done, yet "what they have done" is out of their control.
The daughter's name is never mentioned.

After Aron and Mela wake up, Mela says “if we had known, we wouldn’t have had her” to which Aron replied “we couldn’t know…No we wouldn’t have had her, that’s clear. I remember you came to me and said ‘I’m going to have a child, maybe I should go to a doctor.’ But I wanted a child. I wanted one. And I said ‘don’t be afraid, we’ll manage it somehow. I won’t be any worse than a young father.’ I wanted her.”
The former secretary of the town council, who is of Aryan decent, overhears Aron comment that the water is the color of beer while he's marching to the camp. This is ironic because he's questioning why he made this comment instead of questioning why he's being taken away to die.
This also shows the complicated relationship between Jews and those with the power to assist or condemn them.
it explains why Aron makes this comment, and this shows the difference in how someone who's about to die thinks versus how someone who is safe thinks.
The story opens in a small Polish village, where a man observes someone saying that the river "looks like beer." It then flashes back to when Aron and Mela wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of trucks arriving in the town. They know the trucks are coming to deport them and their daughter, and they contemplate trying to hide from them but decide against it. The SS officers break down the door and force them out of the house, where they are forced to march. During the march, Aron tries to save his daughter, but she is killed anyways.
The title is ironic because "a spring morning" would usually represent rebirth and the blossoming of new life, which leads the reader to believe that story would be happy and everything will be okay at the end. However, the end shows that there is no hope and there is not a blossoming of new life. There are just lives that are cut short.
"He sat down on the edge of the bed, which sagged under his weight. He was still robust, though no longer so healthy looking as he used to be. Now he was pale and grey, and all that paller and greyness was the mark of hunger and poverty. And terror too, no doubt."
"He wanted to stand up and walk over to the window, but he was so heavy he couldn't."
"His fear left him, his hands stopped trembling. He stood there, large and solid-- breathing as if he were carrying an enormous weight."
"Don't cry, let's be calm. Let's be strong and endure this with dignity."
"The child in his arms felt heavier and heavier, but not because of her weight."
"He bent towards the child again seeking the strength that flowed from her silky, warm, young body
