Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda (NaHC03) and an edible acid like tartaric acid.
Baking powder on heating produces carbon dioxide gas which causes bread or cake to rise making it soft and spongy.

NaHCO3 + H --(heat)-- CO2 + H2O + sodium salt tartaric acid

Hloo dear....
Here's the answer for ur question...
As we know the chemical formula of baking powder if NaHCO3 on heating baking powder that is sodium hydrogen carbonate it releases Na2CO3 ( sodium carbonate) , carbon dioxide and water. This carbon dioxide makes cake spongy and fluffy. Without adding baking powder, cake will become small and hard.
The reaction is as follows:-
2NaHCO3-------(heat) ---> Na2CO3+ CO2+ H2O
Hope it will help u:-)
