When sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is heated, it becomes sodium carbonate. In this process water and carbon dioxide is released. The CO2 starves the fire of O2.

The Sodium bicarbonate is commonly referred as baking soda. It could be acted as leavening agent in the process of baking.

Explanation:

  • Apart from baking, it has several other functions as well like maintaining proper pH levels in water like swimming pools, cleaning, extinguishing fires.
  • This baking soda could be used in class C fire extinguishers. When this sodium bicarbonate is heated, it eventually becomes sodium carbonate.
  • During the process, the \mathrm{CO}_{2} and water is released. This \mathrm{CO}_{2} will off the oxygen supply and stop the fire.
