The decrease in diversity when moving from lower latitudes towards higher latitudes is referred to as Latitudinal Diversity Gradient. Generally it is observed that the diversity richness is more in the areas near the equator than at the poles. But ultimately species richness depends upon the factors affecting speciation, extinction, immigration and emigration in a particular area.
Altitude also affects the diversity richness inversely. High altitudes are less diverse than lower altitudes. This happens because as we move up, the atmosphere becomes less dense and due to lack of oxygen only a few species are able to sustain life at higher altitudes.
It's basically the conditions of the surroundings of an area that decide the species diversity of that area.
