The temporary hardness of is caused due to the presence of calcium bicarbonate[Ca(HCO₃)₂] or/and magnesium bicarbonate [Mg(HCO₃)₂] in it. The temporary hardness of water can be easily removed by boiling. On boiling, calcium and magnesium bicarbonates decompose to give the precipitate of calcium and magnesium carbonates. The precipitates can be removed by filtration.

Ca(HCO₃)2⇒ CaCO₃ (s) + H₂O (l) + CO₂ (g)

Mg(HCO₃)₂ ⇒MgCO₃ (s) + H₂O (l) + CO₂ (g)
