Plants and animals are the two primary systems in the biosphere's cycle of life, with plants "exhaling" oxygen through photosynthesis and animals inhaling oxygen through the lungs and exhaling carbon dioxide as a byproduct. ... This balancing process of complementary systems is known as respiration and photosynthesis

Plants breath by the process of photosynthesis that is they take in CO2 and release O2.
The CO2 helps yo breakdown glucose.
In animals they inhale O2 and exhale CO2.
